Self Storage Brent Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety policy sets out the principles and procedures adopted by Self Storage Brent to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of employees, contractors, customers and visitors. It applies to all storage facilities, offices, common areas and any associated removal and handling activities carried out on or from our premises.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Self Storage Brent is committed to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy environment. We will take all reasonably practicable steps to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health, and to promote safe practices in storage operations and any related removal services. Our objectives are to minimise risks, comply with applicable health and safety law, and continuously improve our safety performance.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management holds overall responsibility for health and safety within Self Storage Brent. They will ensure that:
Suitable resources are allocated to manage health and safety effectively. Clear roles, responsibilities and reporting lines are defined. Risk assessments are carried out, reviewed and acted upon. Safe systems of work are implemented and monitored. Health and safety performance is regularly reviewed and improved where necessary.
Managers and supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy in their areas, communicating requirements to staff and contractors, and addressing any concerns or non-compliance promptly.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees are required to:
Follow all health and safety procedures, instructions and training. Use equipment, storage units and handling aids correctly. Report hazards, near misses, defects or unsafe practices without delay. Co-operate with management in implementing safety measures and investigations. Refrain from horseplay, misuse of equipment or any behaviour that could cause harm.
Failure to comply with these responsibilities may result in disciplinary action.
Customer and Visitor Safety
Self Storage Brent is committed to providing safe and well-managed premises for customers and visitors. To support this aim, we will:
Provide clear signage and guidance on safe use of corridors, loading bays and lifts. Maintain lighting, access routes and parking areas in a safe condition so far as reasonably practicable. Inform customers of prohibited or restricted items, such as hazardous substances or flammable materials that may not be stored. Provide information on safe manual handling of goods and safe use of trolleys and other handling equipment where available.
Customers and visitors are expected to follow all site rules, signage and instructions issued by staff, and to take reasonable care for their own safety and that of others.
Risk Assessment and Hazard Control
Self Storage Brent will conduct and maintain risk assessments for key activities, including storage operations, use of loading bays, vehicular movements, and any supporting removal and transport tasks that take place on our premises. Identified risks will be controlled through measures such as:
Safe layout and design of traffic routes, loading areas and pedestrian walkways. Use of barriers, markings and signage to separate people and vehicles where appropriate. Regular inspection and maintenance of buildings, fixtures, fittings and safety equipment. Procedures for dealing with spills, breakages and other foreseeable incidents.
Risk assessments will be reviewed periodically and following significant changes, incidents or new activities.
Safe Use of Equipment and Manual Handling
Self Storage Brent recognises that manual handling and use of handling aids are central to both storage and removal activities. To reduce the risk of injury we will:
Provide suitable trolleys and handling aids where reasonably practicable. Ensure that any lifting or mechanical equipment supplied by us is maintained in a safe condition. Train relevant staff in safe manual handling techniques and the correct use of equipment. Encourage customers and contractors to plan lifts, avoid overloading and seek assistance where needed.
Staff and customers must not use any equipment that appears damaged or unsuitable, and must report any defects immediately.
Contractors and Third Parties
Contractors, including removal companies operating on our premises, must comply with this policy and with applicable legal duties. Self Storage Brent will, as far as reasonably practicable:
Provide contractors with relevant health and safety information about the site, including emergency arrangements and restricted areas. Require contractors to carry out their own risk assessments and to use competent personnel. Monitor contractor activities where appropriate to ensure that they do not put others at risk.
Contractors are required to co-operate with our staff, follow site rules and address any unsafe practices without delay.
Emergency Procedures and First Aid
Self Storage Brent will maintain and communicate clear procedures for fire safety, evacuation and other emergencies. This includes:
Provision and maintenance of appropriate fire detection and firefighting equipment. Display of evacuation instructions and fire exit routes. Regular checks of escape routes to ensure they are kept clear and usable. Appointment and training of staff with specific emergency roles where necessary.
First aid arrangements, including access to first aid supplies and trained personnel during operating hours, will be maintained and signposted. All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported and recorded so that they can be investigated and, where necessary, corrective actions implemented.
Information, Instruction and Training
Self Storage Brent will provide appropriate information, instruction and training to employees so they can work safely and fulfil their responsibilities. This may include induction training, task-specific guidance for storage and handling, refresher training and communication of changes in procedures or legislation.
Health and safety information will be made accessible to staff, and key elements relevant to customers and visitors will be clearly communicated through signage, verbal briefings or written guidance where appropriate.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Self Storage Brent will monitor compliance with this policy through inspections, audits, incident reviews and staff feedback. We will take corrective and preventive actions where deficiencies are identified. This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated when required by changes in operations, legislation or best practice.
By working together, management, employees, customers, contractors and visitors can help maintain a safe, secure and efficient environment for storage, removals and related activities at Self Storage Brent.
